SALISBURY, N.C. — Livingstone College is proud to announce that acclaimed scholar, cultural critic, and best-selling author Dr. Michael Eric Dyson was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters during the College’s 2025 Winter Commencement Ceremony on Friday, December 12, in Varick Auditorium. Widely regarded as one of the nation’s most influential public intellectuals, Dyson has spent more than four decades elevating conversations on race, class, social justice, hip-hop culture, theology, and the Black experience in America. His body of work, which includes more than 25 published books, extensive national commentary, and teaching appointments at top-tier universities, continues to shape public discourse and inspire emerging leaders around the world.

Dyson, who currently serves as a Distinguished University Professor at Vanderbilt University, has become a powerful voice across media platforms such as MSNBC, CNN, ABC, and NPR. His critically acclaimed works, including Tears We Cannot Stop, The Black Presidency, and Holler If You Hear Me, have cemented his status as an essential interpreter of American life and a champion for truth, justice, and cultural understanding. His dynamic speaking style and ability to connect scholarship with everyday experiences have made him a transformative figure in both academic and public spaces.

In a particularly moving moment, Livingstone College President and CEO Dr. Anthony J. Davis, returning to the public stage exactly one month after undergoing kidney transplant surgery, joined Acting President Dr. Dawn B. McNair to personally present the honorary degree to Dyson. Davis, who originally planned to participate in commencement virtually, ultimately chose to attend in person because he shared that he did not want to miss that moment. He also delivered a heartfelt charge to the graduates, encouraging them to continue to be “resilient, relevant, and ready” as they step into the next chapter of their lives.

McNair noted that honoring Dyson underscores the College’s commitment to recognizing leaders whose work reflects excellence, courage, and service. She shared that his contributions “embody the mission and legacy of Livingstone College, challenging us to think critically, lead boldly, and remain committed to justice.” Dyson also delivered the commencement address to the Class of 2025, offering a powerful and inspiring message that encouraged graduates to enter the world with purpose, resilience, and conviction.

The ceremony brought together graduates, families, alumni, faculty, and community supporters to celebrate this milestone and to recognize the enduring impact of leaders like Dyson, whose work continues to uplift and empower future generations.
